Drug
Demand Reduction Program (DDRP)
Over
the years, more substances of abuse, some previously unknown
to mankind and other wholly indigenous to the Nigerian environment,
have surfaced. Thus PADDI is continually engaged in ensuring
that the populace is properly sensitized as to the dire consequences
of illicit drug use. Referral and counseling services are
also provided.
The
domestic successes of our law enforcement agencies in the
areas of curbing illicit drug trafficking (using Nigeria as
a trans-shipment point for illicit substances), has conversely
given rise to increase in local demand and consumption of
illicit substances. Thus services in the areas of drug demand
reduction programs are evre in demand.
Tobacco Control Program
(TCP)
A
direct off-shoot of our DDR Programs, PADDI realized in the
course of our executing our primary programmatic areas that
cigarettes, the 'flagship' of the tobacco industry, is recognized
as a 'gate-way drug'. Survey conducted in several communities
had established that there was a direct correlation between
the age of becoming a habitual smoker and experimentation
and subsequent dependence/regular usage of illicit substances
in later life.
It
was thus incumbent on PADDI to aggressively pursue a TCProgram
to forestal on the one hand the growing global tobacco epidemic
and also any increase in the number of youths likely to experiment
with illicit substances in future.
A
direct consequence of the successes attained by tobacco control
and health activists in the west (Europe and America) has
been an increase in the onslaught by tobacco multinationals
in developing countries of the ‘south’ (Nigeria
included). Thishas increased the ‘work-load’ of
our organization.
HIV/AIDS,
Reproductive Issues & Drug Abuse Program
The
'A. B. C.' of HIV/AIDS prevention, which stands for 'Abstinence,
Be faithful and Condoms' can only be attained in an environment
of self consciousness which is definitely vitiated by abuse
of of illicit substances. Also the risk of contracting the
HIV virus is quite high amongst Intravenous Drug Users (I.D.U.)
Human
& Health Right Programs
Our
Humanity gives rise to inalienable and fundamental rights,
the protection and promotion of which is the duty of each
and every member of the human race. The deprivation or denial
of these fundamental rights to any member of the human race
anywhere ought to be source of concern to all.
This
program area is fundamental and cuts across all other thematic
areas of PADDI activities.
